ELKRIDGE, MD – March 31 – WUSA9 reporter Garrett Haake has been covering the investigation of the shoot out at the entrance to the National Security Agency’s entrance at Fort Meade, Maryland on Monday.

One of two cross dressing men who drove a white Ford Escape SUV onto the Fort Meade complex was killed and the other man in the vehicle was injured. A NSA police officer was injured and taken to hospital

Garrett says the incident all began when a man registered at a motel ten miles from the entrance to Fort Meade. It was at 7:30 a.m. Within an hour he ran out of his room and said two transvestites had stolen his SUV. 911 was called and a vehicle description provided to Howard County police.

Washington, March 30 – One man has been fatally shot and another injured while trying to ram the main gate at the National Security Agency headquarters. The facility is located in Maryland between Washington and Baltimore.

The two men tried to crash the gate in a stolen Ford Escape SUV. They were wearing women’s clothing – wigs and bras. WUSA9 says the men were stopped by NSA police at a secondary barrier where the law enforcement officer was injured.

NBC News reports the FBI is not involved in the investigation and is being treated as a local criminal matter. Washington’s NBC Chopper4 reports emergency workers could be seen caring for an injured, uniformed man who was loaded into an ambulance.

Investigators discovered cocaine and weapons inside the stolen SUV.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation says a motive has not been established but it is not believed to be terrorism related.

That’s because it’s likely the two men did not know they were about to enter the NSA’s headquarters when they exited in their stolen SUV off busy Interstate 294.

Deadly Fort Meade gate crashing

WUSA9s reporter Scott Broom reports that the main gate entrance is reached immediately by an off ramp of bush Interstate 294. More than 10,000 Fort Meade employees use the ramp daily.

An NSA statement says two people were in the vehicle that attempted to make an unauthorized entry to the agency’s campus at Fort Meade, Maryland.

The agency says: “the driver then failed to obey an NSA Police officer’s routine instructions for safely exiting the secure campus. The vehicle failed to stop and barriers were deployed.”

The agency says the unauthorized vehicle then accelerated toward an NSA Police vehicle blocking the road, and police fired at them when the driver refused to stop, crashing into the police vehicle.

“The incident has been contained and is under investigation,” said Col. Brian Foley, Fort Meade garrison command.
