Indiana GOP eats crow
BY KYLE ANDREW BROWNIndianapolis, April 2 – Just hours before tip off time for Saturday’s Final Four semi-final in this big time sports city, the state’s Republication leaders have announced their Fix for their Indiana discrimination Law.
The Indy Star reports that business, civic and sports leaders who have strongly called for a fix to the divisive law. At a news conference in the State House the Republican leaders who wrote the law say the fix will explicitly protect sexual orientation and gender identity in a new law.
Joining the Republican leaders at the press conference were Allison Melangton, who headed planning for the 2012 Super Bowl in Indianapolis, Jim Morris, vice chairman of the Pacers, former Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson and Salesforce Marketing Cloud CEO Scott McCorkle
Indy Star reporters Tony Cook and Tom LoBianco said that Republican House Speaker Brian Bosma apologized for the damage sustained in the intense reaction to the law.
That’s unusual for a politician to actually apologize for something he did not get away with. Surely all these concerns had been voiced during the legislation’s debate?
Notably not present was Indiana governor Mike Pence (R).
FIX IT NOW
BY KYLE ANDREW BROWN
WASHINGTON, March 30 – Just forget about the fact that Indiana Republican governor Mike Pence is leading the GOP fight to permit businesses in his state to decide if gay people meet the religious criteria of street front vendors.
Black folk in Indiana all to well remember the heydays of the Indiana Klu Klux Klan in their state. That was the group you’ll recall, Millennials, when white people in America decided what black people they were allowed to tar and feather. Worse yet: Lynch – Burn – and Hang.
Perhaps the Indiana governor felt re-fortified by his appearance on Rupert Murdoch’s FOX News morning show on Monday. Fox and Friends functions in an alternate universe of old white men, pretty legged ladies and hucksters peddling their books and GOP presidential aspirations.
Let’s not give Fox News all the credit for the shame that Mike Pence has brought upon himself, Indiana and the American notion of Life – Liberty – and the Pursuit of Happiness for all.
The political idea that Republican presidential hopeful Mike Pence needs to Fix This and Fix This Now is besides the point.
The damage has already been done.
Mike Pence was never meant to be a governor. A partisan and dysfunctional Congress that lives on bright line divisions was his home for 12 years, and that’s where he belongs — in a place where a person can rise high by talking well and digging in and not really doing much. – Matthew Tully, Indianapolis Star.
