PARIS, April 9 – French television TV5 Monde was taken off the air late Wednesday night.
On the channel’s Facebook page a “profile photo of a masked man wearing a keffiyeh – le drapeau noir de Daech : the black flag Daech and the inscription CyberCaliphate,“ as described by Le Figaro.
On Twitter a post the TV5 stream read: «Je Suis ISIS» : I am ISIS.
The major state broadcaster France2 and affiliated stations were unaffected by the attack.
TV5 Monde’s director Yves Bigot says in a youtube post: “TV5 Monde was the victim of an extremely powerful cyber attack. This piracy : piratage has led all of our eleven stations, nine editions and two themes to turn black screens. And we lost at the same time control of our social networks and our websites.”
«TV5 monde a été victime d’une cyberattaque extrêmement puissante. Ce piratage a conduit l’ensemble de nos onze chaînes, les neuf généralistes et les deux thématiques, a virer à l’écran noir et nous avons perdu dans le même temps le contrôle de nos réseaux sociaux et de nos sites Internet» expliquait-il alors.
Broadcasting on TV5 Monde began in 1984 under the direction of the French Foreign Minister. The number 5 represents the 5 founding state broadcasters from France (3), Switzerland (1) and Belgium (1). Today the company is an independent broadcaster.
Programming content on TV5 Monde comes from a consortium of broadcasters in France and Quebec. Global editions are produced for Asia, Africa, Canada and the Americas.
