Wehrlein Leads Standings
BY KYLE ANDREW BROWN
SPIELBERG, August 1 – The Australian Alps proved favorable to Edoardo Mortara and Audi Sport. On Saturday the Italian driver won the first race of the fifth round of the 2015 Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters season at the Red Bull Ring.
Audi teammate Jamie Green took an early lead in the 40 minute race, passing Mortara at the first corner. His lead was cut short at the turn one exit with a gearshift problem.
After dropping to the back of the pack Green retired. The English driver leaves behind his two month reign at the top of the standings which began at the Lausitzring race in May.
When Green slowed, Montara regained the lead and never looked back. He quickly established a margin approaching two seconds, gradually building to three.
Montara set the best lap time with a 1:24.714 on the 4.326 km track. He was just 0.193 seconds ahead of Jamie Green.
EDOARDO MORTARA: “It was a perfect lap. I had some problems with my first set of tires, and we were quite far behind.”
“I couldn’t actually set my best lap time when I was improving, as we had to come in. I was actually nervous, but my engineer wasn’t.”
The race was red flagged with around eight minutes remaining. Audi Sports Miguel Molina suddenly stopped in the middle of turn six – delaying the race until the Spaniard’s RS5 DTM was removed.
Mercedes Formula 1 reserve Pascal Wehrlein finished in second place taking command of the standings.
STANDINGS: Wehrlein 94. Ekstrom 86. Mortara 83 points. Green 81.
