Meet the Press with David Gregory, Scoop, Exclusive
DAVID: I’m David Gregory in Washington. I’ll be joined shortly here in the NBC News Washington Studios by former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney. For my exclusive interview to be seen across the NBC global digital platforms. To talk ObamaCare – – Immigration – – the Economy. Where the nation is headed on Defense – – Ted Cruz – – and Education. Only here this Sunday Morning, exclusively, here on NBC News and Meet the Press.
ANNOUNCER: From our NBC News Studios in Washington, It’s Meet the Press. Here again, is David Gregory.
DAVID: I’m joined in our NBC News Washington Studio by the former governor of Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney. Governor, Good Morning, thank you for joining us here today on NBC. Let’s get right to our first – –
THE GOVERNOR: David, Good Morning to you. Let me just say how terrific it is to be here with you. It’s good to be back here today in Washington.
DAVID: Governor Romney, you’ve stayed out of the public debate here in Washington these last critical weeks of the Republican Party’s shutdown of the entire Federal Government. The Congress of the United States has been gripped with . . . (garbled) . . . and tell us: In a Romney Presidency is this where we’d be right now?
THE GOVERNOR: David, yes. You are right. It’s sure been one heck of a couple weeks here in Washington our nation’s capital. I know you – – and may I say – – yes, your question is central to our entire nation’s very vital need to move forward. To move this great nation of ours forward on a positive Agenda of Economic Growth and the entire Global Community. And the stabilized economy of the world is counting on what we do as a nation, joined together, right here – – right now, in Washington.
DAVID: But Governor Romney, on the ques – –
THE GOVERNOR: Yes, David. You’re are right. I want to speak very specifically to your question. Paul Ryan and I traveled together across this great nation of ours. With our wives, Ann and Janna. We talked to the struggling farmers in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
We met with the small town business owners in Burlington, Vermont. These men – and women too – they told us every day at every stop we made. America wants Washington to do the business of what Washington does. The framers of our nation’s Constitution when they sat down together in Philadelphia and established our three co-equal branches – –
DAVID: Moving right along, Governor. You said during the Campaign that President Obama – – at the time he was candidate Barack Obama – – you said right here exclusively on Meet the Press that he would not be as effective as you in working with the Congress.
Tell us, Governor, were you right?
THE GOVERNOR: Yes, Yes I see what you mean David. We, and I mean the entire Republican Leadership in Washington, these are all very fine men. They have each and every one been elected to high office to serve our great nation. By the men – and the women too – of each of our 50 great states.
And to solve our nation’s problems. My experience as the successful Governor of Massachusetts – – may I say David we worked closely and honestly and effectively together – myself and the Democrat – all of them.
To bring about real change. This is the leadership Paul Ryan and I promised to bring to Washington. Had we been elected.
DAVID: Let me pose a hypothetical question to you Governor. Ted Cruz. You are saying that working with Ted Cruz you – –
THE GOVERNOR: Very much so. Very much so, David. All the Republican Leadership is dedicated to getting America moving again. To move beyond the deep – the very deep – malaise that grips the Democrat party in both Houses of the Congress.
DAVID: Governor, you are in Washington this week to talk about your soon to be published in hardback already at the top of the New York Times Advance Copy Book List on Amazon.com. Governor, is there anything you regret about your Campaign for the Presidency of the United States of America?
THE GOVERNOR: I’ll be in town talking with all the key business leaders – all fine men – who are the bedrock of our nation’s economy. The United States Chamber of Commerce. My very good friend Bill Marriott.
And thank you so much, David, for reading the Advance Copy I had Ann send along to you. By the way, Ann says “Hi” to you David. Her best wishes.
We, I mean, I worked every afternoon on the book after coming home to be with my 5 sons and my 23 grandchildren. And Ann would be there up at the Main House in the kitchen baking cookies for Chris Wallace. I want to share with all of America my tremendous and heartfelt understanding of Moving America Forward.
DAVID: Governor, thank you very much for being with us here – exclusively here – on NBC News Meet the Press!
THE GOVERNOR: David, it has been good to be with you and to talk with you this morning. Always a pleasure.
DAVID: When we return, I’ll talk exclusively with the Governor of Massachusetts, Deval Patrick.
