Bob Schieffer Scott Simon CBS Evening News

April 12, 2015

Scott Simon: Bob Schieffer is our Chief Washington Correspondent and anchor of Face the Nation. Bob, you’ve seen a lot of these. What do you think Hillary Clinton has to do differently this time?

BOB SCHIEFFER: I think what she has to do different, Scott, is to make this about the future. And let people know who she is. And what she plans to do. What she cannot do is let this become something about the past. If they get bogged down in that I think she’s gonna have a hard time. She’s an overwhelming favorite. There’s no question about that. That’s the challenge that she faces.

SCOTT: But what about this controversy about her using her private email account when she was doing business as Secretary of State? Is that going to hurt her?

BOB:  I’ll tell you. I think it does have the potential to do just that, Scott. Because what that does is really kind opens the door to cause people to start thinking and looking back. And once you start going that trail and start talking about you know the Whitewater and the Rose Law Firm and did they get improper business while Bill Clinton was President. And then one scandal after another.

If this campaign becomes about what used to be I think she’s going to have a problem. Especially in the General Election. She again, I would just emphasize, she has to keep the focus on looking ahead. Defining herself – not her husband. And telling people what she can do better about their future than what’s being done right now.

SCOTT: The analysis of Bob Schieffer tonight. Thank you, Bob.
