In Adriatic Sea the ferry Norman Atlantic has sunk – daring rescue by Greek and Italian Coast Guards saved 432 aboard the burning vessel. 10 passengers are known to have perished on ferry as search efforts continue into night.

Early Sunday morning fire broke out on ferry Norman Atlantic car deck – containment was hampered by turbulent weather. Valiant rescue efforts by Italy and Greece Coast Guards in the disaster on Adriatic Sea in turbulent seas.

Last to abandon ship Norman Atlantic, CAPT Argilio Giacomazzi said: “The work of the navy, civil protection and all was really impressive. I express my gratitude and closeness to the families of the victims.” Recovery 427 people from the burning ship, mostly with helicopters – winds of 40 knots – was a historic undertaking,” added ADM Giuseppe De Giorgi, Italy’s Chief of Naval Operations.
